В статье проанализирована индикаторная функция сленга как показателя социального статуса коммуниканта. Исследованы особенности речевого поведения социальных групп, представленных в романе Дж. Сэлинджера «Над пропастью во ржи». Выявлены лексические особенности речи перечисленных групп.

Language is being constantly subject to changes and, most of all, changes in always important functional and stylistic formation of language. There has always been an interest in the lexicon that gives the text expressive features. It is quite understandable as slang attracts public by its metaphoricalness, expressiveness and "unconventionality". Slang vocabulary represents a large enough vocabulary pool and is of a high utility. Its study contributes to the linguistic competence of speakers, the development of standard of speech and a sense of communicative practicability of language use in various areas of communication.
The purpose of the study is to analyze the indicator function of slang acting as a marker of social status.
The purpose in view has identified a number of issues solved in the course of the study: to consider different approaches to the concept of "slang" and to examine the existing classification of slang; to identify social groups described in the novel "The Catcher in the Rye"; to identify and describe slangisms indicative to each of these social groups.
The following methods have been used in the study: continuous sampling, contextual and component analysis. As the material of the study served the work of J. Salinger "The Catcher in the Rye".
